The first publication in the Australiana series is Charles Edward Horsley’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D minor, opus 29 (1849), edited by Richard Divall. Horsley (1822–1876) was a London-born German-trained composer who began an extended and influential stay in Australia in 1860. This work was composed in London in 1849 and was thought to be lost until performance parts in the Johann Secundus Kruse papers in the National Library of Australia were identified and edited by Divall for this important new critical edition.
About the editor
Associate Professor Richard Divall OBE, a distinguished Melbourne conductor, musicologist and composer, was Music Director of the Victoria State Opera from 1972 to 1997, then Principal Resident Conductor of Opera Australia for five years. He is a Principal Fellow in the Faculty of Music, University of Melbourne. From 1968 he was a pioneer in the editing and performance of colonial Australian music and has edited well over two hundred Australian works, including important works by Hart, Marshall-Hall, Horsley and Kelly. He has also been active internationally as an editor of opera and is currently involved in a fifteen-volume edition of Baroque Maltese Music for the Wignacourt Museum in Malta. He is a Knight of Malta in Religious Profession.
